Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölümü’nden mezun olduktan sonra eğitimine Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nde devam etmiştir. Princeton Üniversitesi’nde yöneylem araştırması ve finans mühendisliği alanında doktora derecesi alan Erkan, ABD’deki önemli finansal kuruluşlarda üst düzey yöneticilik yapmıştır.

Hafize Gaye Erkan’ın atanması, Türkiye’de ekonomi politikalarında bir değişiklik olacağı ve önceki dönemde uygulanan Türkiye Ekonomi Modeli’nin terk edilip, yeniden ortodoks ekonomi politikalarına dönüleceği şeklinde yorumlanmıştır. Hafize Gaye Erkan, born in 1982 in Istanbul, Turkey, is the newly appointed President of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT). She obtained her undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. Erkan continued her education in the United States, where she completed her doctoral degree in Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University, becoming the first student to finish the program in just one year. She also pursued executive education programs in management sciences at Harvard Business School and leadership at Stanford University.

Erkan began her career at Goldman Sachs in 2005, where she provided consulting services on balance sheet management, stress testing, capital planning, risk management, mergers and acquisitions to major U.S. banks and insurance companies. Later, she joined First Republic Bank in 2014, serving in various roles such as Co-CEO, President, Board Member, Investment Director, Deposit Director, and Deputy Risk Director during her approximately 8-year tenure. She also served on the Board of Directors of Tiffany & Co., a jewelry company based in the United States, and joined the Board of Marsh McLennan, a global financial consulting firm listed on the Fortune 500, in 2022.

Erkan has been recognized for her achievements in the finance industry. In 2018, she was named the only woman under the age of 40 to hold the position of President or CEO among the top 100 banks in the United States by the San Francisco Business Times. She was also included in the “40 Under 40 Lists” of both San Francisco Business Times and Crain New York Business. In 2019, she was featured in Crain’s “Women to Watch in Banking and Finance” and American Banker’s “Most Watched Women” lists.
